BOC Group is contributing to the EU-funded research project MODAPTO as a core partner, bringing our Business Process Management expertise into the development of digital twin-enabled manufacturing. The project looks at how digital twins can support modular, intelligent production systems and has recently been featured in Manufacturing Technology Insights Europe for its practical relevance to real-world industrial environments.

MODAPTO focuses on how digital twins technology can be applied where transformation pressure is highest: real production lines. In these settings, change is constant. Machines are added or removed, production steps adjusted and sometimes even entire lines are reconfigured to meet new demands. The project delves into modular manufacturing systems designed for this level of flexibility. Digital twins play a central role here, allowing manufacturers to see what’s happening on the factory floor, test adjustments and adapt production without disrupting live operations.

As the digital twins concept gains in popularity, it’s often presented as a strategic bridge between operational reality and planning, optimization, and decision-making. In practice, however, many initiatives still stop after early pilots. Without a shared and trustworthy understanding of how processes, systems, and dependencies actually work together, digital twins struggle to deliver the context needed for decisions that scale beyond isolated use cases.

This is exactly the gap that MODAPTO addresses. Instead of treating digital twins as standalone technical solutions, the project embeds them into a modular framework grounded in validated process knowledge. This makes it possible to explore scenarios, simulate changes, and assess reconfiguration options before adjustments are made – helping teams reduce risk and move forward with greater confidence.

Within MODAPTO, we contribute our BPM expertise by using ADONIS to model, structure, and validate production processes in digital twin-enabled environments. These models create a shared, decision-ready view of reality that links physical production elements with their digital counterparts. By anchoring digital twins in reliable process data, ADONIS helps organizations to orchestrate, manage and optimize production based on information they can trust.

The recent coverage of MODAPTO in Manufacturing Technology Insights Europe reflects this growing interest in the practical, standards-based approaches to digital twins. As initiatives move from conceptual to operational use, the importance of reliable, model-based representations of reality is becoming increasingly clear.

MODAPTO also reflects our broader, research-driven approach to innovation. Through active participation in EU-funded research, we get to test our tools in complex, real-world settings, explore emerging use cases, and help shape how new technologies are applied in practice. These experiences may influence our future product developments – but more importantly, they deepen our understanding of how companies manage complexity and make decisions at scale.

Ultimately, MODAPTO demonstrates a core principle behind our innovation work: technology matters most when it is grounded in real use cases and real needs. This is what allows innovation to move from promising ideas to lasting impact.
